PEAR, ROQUEFORT, WALNUT, AND POPPY SEED SALAD

A while ago, I wrote an article on how to create a delicious cheese platter, emphasizing that, although it’s not as common in some places, in certain cultures like the French (and others), cheeses are seen as a glorious conclusion to a lavish meal—especially when paired with the right wine to enhance their flavors perfectly.

Today, I’d like to suggest a salad inspired by the classic combination of cheese, nuts, and fruits from such a platter. This salad is as delightful in taste as it is visually appealing. Refined in its very simplicity, it can be a pleasant surprise for any guest or a delightful treat if you decide to prepare it just for yourself!

The recipe couldn’t be simpler, as it doesn’t require any complicated techniques—just a blend of simple, high-quality ingredients. In fact, even those who have never stepped into a kitchen (to cook) can prepare this salad, and they’re sure to impress!

For a small platter, I used:

  • one pear

  • a piece of Roquefort cheese (which can easily be substituted with its Italian counterpart, Gorgonzola)

  • pecan nuts

  • poppy seeds

  • some grated Parmesan cheese

Perhaps the only thing to keep in mind is that the main ingredients, the cheese and fruit, should be at room temperature—so take them out of the fridge a bit beforehand to allow their flavors to fully develop. Then, in just five minutes, a sophisticated salad will steal the spotlight on any table where it's served!

Slice the pear into thick wedges and arrange them on the platter like the blades of a pinwheel. Alternate the slices of blue cheese between them, place a pecan here and there, and, for a finishing touch, sprinkle a few poppy seeds and a bit of grated Parmesan on top. If you prefer, you can skip the Parmesan and instead drizzle a little honey. I opted for the simple version, which was undoubtedly a hit—especially when served with a fragrant wine and enjoyed in the company of good friends. I wish the same for you!
